 Framing the City

Create a compelling street photograph by framing your subjects within its surroundings.

Subframing is a technique wherein you use elements in your image to frame your main subject, mimicking a picture-within-a-picture effect. Aside from adding an interesting visual element, it can draw the viewers' attention to the central focus or create depth in a photograph. For this challenge, take advantage of bustling urban settings and shoot engaging photos that use subframing. Here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Create Context: Add more story to your portraits by including decorated windows, doors, and other geometrical elements to box your subject. Take inspiration from these shots that used a store sign and bus stop for subframing.
  • Mirror Image: Go beyond shooting those classic self-portraits and focus on different scenes reflected on car mirrors.
  • Go the Abstract Route: Framing your subject doesn't have to rely on concrete shapes. Go the abstract route and experiment with shadows or blurry colors.

Each participant may submit up to 10 photographs. This competition serves as the qualifying round for the Urban Explorers category of our TEN AND ONE Annual Lomography Photo Awards 2019.
