Specializing in sports photography, Mathieu Aghababian is passionate about both analogue and digital photography. He used our new ultra-wide lens to shot skateboarders in the suburbs of Paris. With the Lomography Atoll Ultra-Wide 2.8/17 Art Lens mounted on a mirrorless camera, he took advantage of the specifications of the newest addition to our Art Lenses family: a 17 mm focal length with an impressive ultra-wide 103º field of view and minimal distortion. Hello Mathieu, could you please introduce yourself to the readers of the Lomography Magazine?

Hello, my name is Mathieu Aghababian. I'm a photographer in the Paris area and I have been taking pictures for 17 years. I mainly take analogue photos for my personal work, even if digital photography took an important place in my professional practice.

You recently tested the new Lomography Atoll Ultra-Wide 2.8/17 Art Lens, what were your first impressions?

It's easy to learn and use the lens, intuitive and well-built.

Could you tell us a little bit about the photos you shot with the Lomography Atoll Ultra-Wide 2.8/17 Art Lens?

I'm originally a sports photographer so for this photoshoot, I stayed in my comfort zone. I used a lot of wide-angle and fisheye lenses, and I can say that the Atoll is part of the good lenses category, no chromatic aberration, moderate distortion, perfect for sport and lifestyle photography.

What do you like in wide-angle photo and video? And what was the widest lens you have worked with in the past?

I enjoy the possibility of being very very (too?) close to my subject, the perspectives are impressive and the images are always spectacular. The shortest focal length I used was a 8 mm with an APS-C camera and a 14 mm with a full-frame camera.

How would you describe your shooting experience with the Lomography Atoll Ultra-Wide 2.8/17 Art Lens? What did you like the most?

It was a very good experience, a bit short, unfortunately when the lens is great, we always want to keep it longer. :) I really like the easy focusing and the fact that it's compact.

You used the lens to take skate pictures but for what other kinds of photography would you recommend the Atoll lens? And what advice would you give to someone trying the lens for the first time?

I think that this lens would be perfect for lifestyle photos. I also think that it would be interesting in street photos and of course, for landscape, like mountains, it would be outstanding!! For first use, I would say to not hesitate to close the diaphragm, it's the same case for almost ultra-wide lenses, the manual focus is quite easy to do when shooting at f/8-f/11, the image is sharp in all of its corners.

Some projects you would to share with us?

I'm currently finishing a lot of film rolls for my YouTube videos. It's taking me a lot of time, more than I would have thought, but currently, my projects are mostly for my channel and it's a lot of time, more time than taking pictures in the end aha!
