Precious Metals - By Melanie King at Photofusion Gallery

Photofusion presents Precious Metals, a solo exhibition by artist and Co-founder of London Alt Photo Melanie King, which runs from June 17th - July 30th. This exhibition explores sustainable methods of making analogue photographic prints with examples of silver-gelatin prints that have been created using Caffenol-c (coffee) paper developer and some inspiring use of un-exposed silver to plate jewellery.

Silver nitrate and ascorbic acid crystallising under the microscope. Melanie King and Leah-Nani Alconcel

Precious Metals by Melanie King investigates the materiality of silver and palladium, considering its’ production within the cosmos, extraction from Earth and its uses within our society. The show includes prints using cyanotype toned with green tea and a collaboration between Melanie and Leah-Nani Alconcel who have produced digital prints using a variety of microscopes within the School of Metallurgy and Materials at the University of Birmingham. These prints show the crystallisation of silver nitrate and ascorbic acid as they respond to light. The photographs demonstrate the dynamic, vibrant agency of photosensitive matter.

Events:

Friday 29 July, 1-5pm Precious Metals Seminar - Melanie will present a seminar which broadly considers the use of precious metals in astronomy, photography, jewellery, and engineering. Plus guest speakers.
