Around the World in Analogue: Philippines

The Philippines is an archipelago consisting of more than 7,000 islands and is best known for its gorgeous beaches and delectable fruit. Palawan Island is the largest island in the western part of the country.

In this edition of Around the World in Analogue, LomoAmigo Yameen shares an overview of his travels through the Philippines, how he photographed the trip, and tips for analogue photographers interested in shooting film abroad.

I made my first trip to the Philippines to visit family and brought two film cameras with me to document the trip. The adventure became the body of work for my photo book, Kuya which I released earlier this year. I travelled to a few different cities including Baguio, Manila, Buguias, Bohol, and the island of Palawan, where these photos were taken.

My biggest tip is to be prepared for a lot of security checks and potential x-ray scans. I was fortunate enough to get hand-checks for my film rolls at the 5 different airports I travelled through. However, my film was x-rayed at a hotel towards the end of the trip and that was a bit unnerving. One x-ray out of a total of 11 security checks is not bad, I suppose. Your mileage may vary, of course.

I originally brought Metropolis with me because I thought it would look really cool in one of the Philippine's big metros such as Manila. However, while on the beautiful island of Palawan, I was curious how Metropolis would interpret the bright sun and colorful buildings. I loaded up a roll of 35 mm Metropolis and made my way to the beach town of El Nido for a mix of street and landscape-style photography. As I walked around taking pictures, I hopelessly wondered how the photos would render on Metropolis’ unique color palette. After a few exciting weeks of anticipation I received the scans back from the lab and was very happy with the results.
