Colorsplashing Parties with LOMOTOMY_

1

When taking party photos, the usual results are brightly lit photos with people posing or going wild. Sometimes they may look plain and fail to show how vibrant the party is. Speaking to lomographer @LOMOTOMY_ we find out how he uses the colorsplashing technique to bring the life of the party to his pictures.

Colorsplashing is a technique wherein you put some form of transparent color in front of your flash in order to change it from the normal white flash to something more colorful. Though it wasn't started by Lomography, the concept and name were popularized with the launch of the Lomography Colorsplash, where the flash had 12 different color gels which you could choose from. Soon after Lomography started selling the flash and the gels themselves which meant it could be attached to all kinds of cameras beyond Lomography cameras.

The colorsplashing pictures that @LOMOTOMY_ shares on his LomoHome are mostly from different intimate parties that he has gone to over the years. You can see his use of different cameras from the Diana F+ with Instant Back, Holga 135 BC TLR, and most frequently the Lomo LC-A+. This shows how versatile the technique is and each camera always has its own spin on the combination. Film stocks are also something you can play around with when using the colorsplash. @LOMOTOMY_ uses Portra 400, Fotomax 200, and Instax films and each film reacted differently to the lighting. One interesting idea could be combining the colorsplash flash with more colorful films like the LomoChrome Purple or Turquoise and see how these colors could turn out.

I first used the Diana F flash with gel filters but that was so unhandy. With the colorsplash flash, it's so much easier. I think colorsplashing is the easiest way to make great lomo-like pictures without special equipment or processing. I currently mostly use the Lomo LC-A+ when I colorsplash.

@LOMOTOMY_ is an advocate for colorsplashing, especially for parties as it gives more exciting and memorable photos for us to look back on. It also gives us a chance to experiment with lighting and the power to set the tone and mood for photos without having to post process. He suggests the following technique for people who want to try out colorsplashing:

My advice – use it for party pictures. It's best in bulb mode when there are some small lights in the background. My favorite color for colorsplashing is light purple. It gives the pictures a unique aesthetic.
