Reimann Pembroke's First Impressions of the LomoApparat

Reimann Pembroke is a Kansas City based photographer and cinematographer who also creates videos surrounding photography, short films, and camera gear. For his latest video he tested out the LomoApparat and gave us his first impressions.

Hi Reimann, welcome to Lomography magazine! Can you tell us about yourself and your work?

Hi, I'm Reimann Pembroke. I'm a photographer and filmmaker who lives near Kansas City. I love to create things and I have always had a passion for image making. I started taking photos about 12 years ago when I took a photography class in high school. We started with film cameras which I think was probably a pretty unique teaching method at that time since digital cameras had been the norm for quite some time. I shoot most of my personal photographic work on film these days. I got into the filmmaking world while I was in college and have been creating videos and films ever since. My main interests in terms of the types of films I like to work on are documentaries and period pieces.

What was your first impression of the LomoApparat?

When I first got the LomoApparat, I was impressed by the materials. I think the leather is a nice touch and the orange/teal color combination is a fun and unique look.

What was your favorite feature of the camera?

I think my favorite feature of this camera was the kaleidoscope filter. That's such a fun and different way to photograph people!

Any tips or tricks for the camera?

If you are indoors, make sure that the flash is on! Otherwise, just don't be afraid to experiment. Try out different combinations of effects that this camera has to offer.

Do you have a favorite shot?

I think my favorite shots are the ones where I was just simply using the wide lens and no effects. The one of the scaffolding and giant tube on the church and the lonely bench by the capitol building are the best compositions in my opinion. It was fun to get to use a focal length I hardly ever shoot!

Who would you recommend the LomoApparat to?

I think the LomoApparat is probably the most unique and versatile point-and-shoot camera that has come out recently. All of the different tools it has (Filters, flash gels, double exposure capability) give you a world of opportunities to experiment with your photography. I think this camera is perfect for beginners who want to get into film photography and make fun photos of their friends at parties. It's equally useful for more experienced film shooters like me who don't have a super wide lens on their other cameras and want to experiment with a different field of view.

What does it mean to you, to see new film cameras being released in 2022?

I think the fact that new film cameras are being produced nowadays is so good for photography! It allows us all to connect with the roots of photography and understand the entire process from developing to scanning to editing and finally printing. It's a craft that means so much to me and needs to be shared. These new cameras will help pass on that knowledge to future generations!

If you could take the LomoApparat anywhere in the world, where would it be?

Any big city! I feel like the wide focal length is really useful to capture tall buildings! More specifically, I would love to visit Seoul, South Korea. I've always been fascinated by Korea and its culture.

Do you have any hopes for the future of analogue photography?

With a steep rise in demand like we've seen, there also comes a rise in prices and less availability. Hopefully, large film companies see the value in continuing production of film photographic materials and products and get their manufacturing process to a point where it can keep up with demand. Then hopefully film can go back to being accessible and more affordable for anyone looking to try out shooting film. My hope is that film continues to be an artistic medium that is available to the masses.

Anything else that you'd like to share?

I run a YouTube channel that is under my name, Reimann Pembroke. There, I have been mainly focusing on my personal film photography work all over the United States. I'm currently making a video series there about Route 66 and documenting various stops along the Mother Road on film. Also, check out my full video review of this camera!
