Around the World in Analogue: Lanzarote, Spain

10

Lanzarote, located east of the Canary Islands, is known for its volcanic landscapes and contrasting colors–whitewashed houses against deep blue waters and rocky red terrain.

The Atlantic island was the first destination to receive the Biosphere Responsible Tourism certificate, with help from Spanish artist, architect and nature advocate César Manrique who took much inspiration from the island's natural environment and advocated for its preservation.

In this edition of Around the World in Analogue, French photographer Yoann (@yooyye) shares images and stories from a recent family trip to Lanzarote.

Photography is more than a passion for me. It has become, I believe, a kind of second language as well as a kind of permanent therapy. I feel good and soothed when I have a device in my hand and the feeling is increased tenfold with an old device.

I really started in 2015 with my iPhone like many people before buying myself a small digital APS-C. It was then by studying the different aspects of photography that I naturally got closer to film photography. I then got the Canon AV1 from my father.

It was an immediate thunderbolt. Thinking before shooting, knowing that the number of shots is limited, the wait before receiving the prints. The pleasure of the photographic experience with film is quite different and multiplied by 1000 in my case.

We had been talking for some time about going on a family trip during the holiday season. Since I live in a fairly cold region with snow, I wanted to know this contrast of going out in the sun in the middle of winter. The Canary Islands are a fairly accessible budget destination. Lanzarote and these lunar and volcanic landscapes were the island that we chose among the seven that make up this archipelago.

We had rented a small house in the south of the island and a car to move around freely. The island is not very big, so I could leave early in the morning and alone to take pictures and come back to pick up the family when they were ready. If I had to come back, I would rather stay in the North of the island, which I find much more interesting.

Lanzarote is a unique and magical island. The landscapes are grandiose and exceptional. The contrast between the white of the architecture and the black of the lava is incredible.
The fact that a single man like Manrique has marked an entire island is also something crazy. You feel like you're invited into his home. No matter where you go on the island, everything reminds you of him.

Even though I had already seen a lot of images of this place, I still fell in love with these volcanoes.

But Lanzarote is also a very touristy place! If you want to have a good experience on this island, I still advise you to avoid the high season. And like all destinations, get up early so you don't miss the beautiful colors of the morning before the light gets too harsh, and be ready for the sunsets!

I went with Portra 400 film that I shot at ISO 200 exposing in the shadows. This film is very fond of light and overexposure. However, I regret a little not having shot more in black and white. I think this island lends itself well to this with these volcanic landscapes and its all-white architecture.

If I had any advice to give, visit the most touristy places very early in the morning! Avoid busy times. Do not expect much from Timanfaya Park and the green lake of Charco de los Clicos. Go taste the wine of La Geria. Go see a sunset in Famara. And get lost!
