Lomography Pioneers: Double Trouble with @Jeabzz

3

One of the Lomography community's favorite techniques is using double and multiple exposures to create stunning and out-of-this-world photos. It's so popular that most of our cameras even have a multiple exposure function to make it easier. For @jeabzz you can see in his photos that this technique is one of the defining traits of his style as he takes a ton of multiple exposures and even connects with other members of the community through international film swaps. Beyond this, he is a founding member of the Parisian Lomo Collective @les_parisiens and has used many Lomography cameras, even being a tester for the Spinner 360°. With his array of photos showing his love for cross-processing film and an abundance of different subjects, we take time to look back at @jeabzz's work and influence on the Lomography community.

Jean Baptiste Saint Pol's Lomography journey started around 2007 when he found a book entitled "The World Through a Plastic Lens" which is a photobook showcasing the power of the Holga camera. Since then he has accumulated an abundance of cameras such as the Holga 120, Diana F+, and Spinner 360, but his favorite and go-to cameras would be the original Lomo LC-A and LC-A+, Sprocket Rocket, and his Nikon FM2. Talking about the Lomo LC-A+ in an interview this is what @jeabzz had to say.

Over the years I´ve collected lots of cameras and I love to shoot with all of them, depending on the mood. However, I always have my LC-A+ with me. This camera offers so many possibilities, it´s small and really easy to use, the ideal snappin’ companion. It was love at first click. The first time I used the LC-A+ was when the Paris Lomography store organized a rumble and lent the LC-A+ for two days. I shot an album for the rumble around the theme of happiness and I was super happy with the results. And on top of everything I came in second place with this album.

Looking at his photos you can tell just like many Lomography Pioneers, Jean was an avid fan of cross-processing slide film to gain those crazy and highly saturated colors. Kodak E100VS would be his favorite film to experiment with as it would create some of the most abundant colors in the process. Fuji Velvia, which is also popular among other Pioneers, is another staple, and his favorite black and white film would be Fomapan 100.

@jeabzz loves connecting with people and you can see this with how many friends he has made over the years through Lomography. As mentioned, he was part of a group calling themselves les_parisiens which consisted of five Parisian Lomographers namely, @jeabzz, @fabyen, @adbigmilk, @guiguiste and @remi-boiteux who would take part in community-generated Lomography challenges as a hobby and a creative outlet.

Definitely, one of the most memorable experiences in the Community was creating the Lomo collective Les Parisiens and all the projects we developed together. It all began when I met @adbigmilk, about two years ago. After chatting through the Lomography website we decided to meet up for drinks. It was a lot of fun and we decided to meet up again, and then soon after, @guiguiste, @fabyen and @remi-boiteux, who I also met through the Lomography website, started joining us! After several drinks and a lot of good times, we decided to create a sort of collective. To share this collaboration with the Community, we asked other Lomographers to suggest a theme and then we’d do a film swap and also shoot around the theme. We had lots of great ideas coming from the Community and it was really a great surprise to feel the enthusiasm around our project!

On the subject of film swaps, @jeabzz shows how creative he can be with collaborations and multiple exposures. Going through his albums you can see how many people he has done film swaps with, including many other respected and talented Lomographers. Based in Paris and eventually New York, his film swaps have shown a cross-cultural exchange ranging from scenes combining Paris and Singapore, Coimbra and Lisboa, LA and Paris, and New York and Bangkok to name a few.

Though no longer active on his LomoHome, Jean's pictures are still undeniably some of the most iconic that you can find on the Lomography website. It’s inspiring to see how far he has taken multiple exposures, and to see how creative you can be with some of Lomography's many cameras. Newcomers and veterans should take time to visit his LomoHome for inspiration. Taken from an interview he had with another Lomographer, here are some words of inspiration from @jeabzz. Just enjoy shooting! Have fun experimenting, get inspiration by looking at other people's LomoHome, try new cameras, new Tipsters. . .the more you shoot, the more you’ll get funky and great results!
